When I was growing up, the first Christian Historical Fiction books I read were by Janette Oke. While I was in Junior High and High School, I tore through her Seasons of the Heart series, then Love Comes Softly, and then the Canadian West series.
In late 1988, I wrote a fan letter to Janette Oke. I told her that I loved reading about her book people and that her books helped me grow closer to God. I must have said something about being teased by the kids at school for my faith, judging by her response to me.
I received the following response from Janette Oke in early 1989, which surprised me greatly. This note has been dear to me and holds a place of honor in my scrapbook.
Dear Karen,
Thank you for your recent letter. It was so nice to hear from you. I am pleased that you have enjoyed sharing the adventures of my 'book people.'
Of course the nicest part of your letter was when you said that you have become closer to God. It is so important to each of us that we keep on growing and maturing in our Christian walk. I am so glad that God has been working in your life and that you have chose to be obedient to Him.
Don't let the other kids bother you with their teasing. The 'real' friends will not treat you in this way. May God be with you daily and bless and keep you.
Janette Oke
When I recently remembered this letter, I wondered if perhaps I was always destined to be an author.
